Georgian Bay

7-17-14
Into the Georgian Bay

We pulled into the bay and the scenery changed a lot. First we had to negotiate the narrow pass from the lock into the bay.

The current flies out pretty good under the bridge. Once past that it was pretty nice but the rocks were everywhere. I have read a ton of stuff on the bay but it was quite a sight to see and probably the most treacherous part.

We were only going a short distance to Honey Harbour but at first the ride was nerve racking as heck. After a while, we got more comfortable with what we were doing and enjoyed the sights. Got to Honey Harbor, chilled on the dock and got to walk into the little town for a while. The marina was really big but 99% of their business is local cottages coming and going to the places. The little boat traffic is unreal. They did have one new dock with power for transients.

7-18-14
Honey Harbor to Henry's Restaurant

Like everybody else that comes through here we had to go to Henry's Resteraunt to eat and we were planning on spending the night there but they do not take slip reservations. We got and early start and made it there right after the lunch crowd left and had a spot right up front on the dock.

Boats and planes were busy coming and going. The dock hands were young kids and they were busy as can be getting everybody in and out. The man on the VHF doing the directing was Paul, the owner of Henry's.

A few minutes after we got docked, Paul was walking by and ask where we were from in Florida. Told him Lake Mary/Sanford and he said "I used to live in Sanford at the Marina". How bizarre is that. We talked for a while on and off while has directing traffic and it was quite the day. He took the time later to show us around a little and was telling us more about his time in Sanford.

About dinner time the place was hopping with all kinds of boats/planes coming in to eat. The place got really quiet right before dark, the only way in and out of here is by air or water. We also met another Looper couple staying overnight also. I wasn't to sure about staying here at first but we had a really great time watching all the people come and go and especially getting to meet and talk to Paul. He is quite the guy. We come back, we are staying here longer.

7-19-14 thru 7-20-14
Henry's to Parry Sound

Said goodbye to Paul and headed to Parry Sound to get some supplies before we hit the more isolated section of the Georgian Bay. The run up was very nice in the Small Craft Channel except, being the weekend, all the cottages were out in force. Let me tell you, they don't care how narrow the cut is, they are coming around you. Doesn't matter is there are 12 boats coming the other way, lookout. Literally I-4 traffic at times. We survived the locals and got to Parry Sound. Talked with everyone and called it a day.
One of the locals pilled into the red spar buoy right before we got there and broke it.
You have to go through several small cuts and no one gives way.

Next day we needed to get provisions for the trip to Killarney. Not much in the way of towns between here and there. We walked into town, 3 miles by the way uphill, and called a taxi for the ride back with all our stuff. Got everything packed up and hung out till time for dinner.
Roger and Mary on the Ta Ta

2 other Loopers. Steve on the Atla and Tonya on the Annabelle
Both were doing the loop single handed.

We met several other Loopers here. Everybody was getting stuff for the run to Killarney.

7-21-14
Big Sound to Regatta Bay

Did some last minute stuff and got a late start to the day but had no idea where we were going. We just figured we find a spot and stop. We cruised across Parry Sound and through the Hole in the Wall Cut, then around Killbear Point which was crowded with boats and beach goers in the park.

The bay area around there is pretty unprotected so we didn't stop. Went through Canoe Channel which is a tight spot but there is a alternate route for bigger boats.

Finally pulled into Regatta Bay which is really projected from all sides. Found a shallow spot in a side cove and anchored up. Tossed the dinghy in the water to do some exploring. Heard the De De boat calling a marina earlier so we ran the 4 miles to see them. Walked around the island for a while and called it a day.
Yep, that's a channel.

Next day it looked like the weather was going to bad that evening so we decided to just stay put in our cozy little spot. Went over to Gilly's in Snug Harbor to drop off some garbage and see if they had gas for the dinghy. Couple people said it was a nice place to eat also. Got there at 11:00 but they didn't open till 12:00. It was only about a mile away so we went back to the boat and came back at noon to eat.

Got back to our spot and explored the area. Late in the afternoon the weather turned ugly. Heavy rain with winds and the dreaded lightening. We had 4 rounds of rain come through. Later it finally calmed down but tomorrow was supposed to be a very windy day. The last 2 nights we had great camping weather. Did we mention how great the weather has been.

7-23-14
Regatta Bay to Byng Inlet

Well the weather was great till this morning. Overcast with blowing winds from the north. Got going anyhow and was met with heavy head seas going up Shawanaga Inlet which runs north/south. That 5 miles were the roughest. For some reason we didn't pass any boats running around. Got through that and went up into Pointe au Baril Channel to check it out. Stopped at the public dock for a while and Checked out the little town.

Decided to go to Byng Inlet and get a place there but that required a run back out into the unprotected channel of the Bay. We ran about 10 miles of open water with heavy chop but the wind was a little less than this morning. We pulled into Wright's Marina and right behind a couple from Florida cruising the northern waters from Michigan.

After chatting for a while, they invited us out to dinner at a restaurant several miles away, The Lost Channel Inn. They have a loaner car to make the trip. We went to dinner at a place so far back into the woods we were joking with them that we didn't have any money and our family wouldn't pay ransom for us. It was a cool little joint and the food was great.

Alan and Sheri from the Sea Y'all

Came back, showered up and knocked down some supplies before bedtime. We are headed to the Bad River tomorrow for some camping out for a couple days.

7-24-14
Byng Inlet to The Bad River

After another cool night and morning we got up and took care of some chores before heading out to the Bad River to do some anchoring and exploring of the French River area. 2 other boats, both locals, we talked to yesterday were headed there also. The Sea Y' All was also going there too so we would have some company.

The ride out was mostly through the small craft route but we had to run into the open bay for several miles. Luckily it was a head on seas at about 3-4' so we just knocked it down at 20-30mph. We arrived in the Bad River Anchorage and found about 8 boats already there. We looked around and found a place to tie up to the rock wall with the help from the crew from the Sea Clef boat in front of us.
Our Rock Dock with Tree Cleats as we called it.

How cool is that. The Sea Y' All came in right after us and anchored in the bay. We dinghyed around the area to check it out and hung out with the Sea Y' All for a few minutes on there boat.

Everybody was riding around the bay in their dinghys and several of us kind of dinghy rafted up and chatted for a bit. Ate some supper and hit the rack for the night.

7-25-14
The next day we finally got out of bed and started out by climbing on the rock wall and exploring the land. After our walk, we got back in Lil Hooker and went to see how far we could go up into the French River Area. The Bad River that we are on is part of the French River. We went for a while and realized we forgot the gopro camera. Went back to get lunch and the camera but someone, not me, decided to get a nap. After a while we jumped back into the dinghy and headed out. Everybody else decided to do the same thing about the same time.

Looked like a dinghy fest in the bay. We got the gopro camera going and shot some video of the spectacular scenery while we were shooting the rapids up several small creeks. We also putted around the area with several other couples exploring any area we could go into. The place is simply amazing. It is a maze of places to explore.

We got back, cooked dinner and went over to see the Sea Y'all crew. After a short visit we headed back to our little rock dock and showered up for the evening.
Our red neck campsite complete with shore power and wind shield.

The winds have been blowing hard the last few days so it has been a nice place to stay to let the weather calm down.

7-26-14
Day 3 and what a day. Woke up early to light rain and went right back to sleep. Our day 3 of the Bad River started out "Bad". We got going after the rain stopped but it was still overcast. Everybody in the bay was kind of slow to get going. We jumped in the dinghy and went exploring some more with the crew from the Sea Y'all and found some new spots.

On the way back, Wendy and I decided to shoot the rapids down to the boat right below where we were instead of going the long way around but the crew of the Sea Y'all said they were going the long way. Well right after we shot down, we looked back and the Sea Y'all crew was right behind us.

We all had a good laugh and then Wendy and I decided to make a run up the rapids. They came over to watch and to pick up the pieces if we crashed. We made it ok and went to their boat to have a drink, Alan said he needed one after that. The Devils Back Door Rapids were right by the bay where we where parked but we weren't sure if we should attempt it being so far from civilization. But we had a fast dinghy so what the heck, we did. We came back to our rock dock and chilled for a while. Right before dinner we went to explore the other side of the river that we haven't been to yet. Came back and cooked dinner right before the rain hit again in the afternoon. But at least it ain't hot. Have we mentioned how nice the weather has been, 50's and 60's at night. After dinner we huddled up in the cabin and went to bed early.

7-27-14
Bad River to Collins Inlet
We had hung out in the Bad River one more day than we were going to but it was an awesome place to hold up. Got up and put everything away for the ride to Beaverstone Bay and Collins Inlet. Wasn't to sure if we would anchor out one more night or run to Killarney. The run over was out in open water for several miles but the bay was not to bad so it didn't take long. We ended up anchoring in the west end of Collins Inlet near the boat Sea Clef. After a while, the Good Idea Sailboat pulled in. We saw both of them in the Bad River. Another boat, the Baby Boomers, was already there.
Sea Clef, Good Idea, Baby Boomers and LeHooker anchored in the western end of Collins Inlet to hide from the winds that were coming.

We dinghyed around for a while and stopped by Good Idea for a couple drinks and snacks along with the Sea Clef crew. After dinner everyone met on the Sea Clef for happy hour. The wind was supposed to kick up pretty good overnight so I wasn't expecting much sleep.

7-28-14
Keyhole Island to Killarney

Well, to say that the strong winds showed up would be an understatement.  We were blown around all night almost in a complete circle sometimes. I was worried a little about the anchor dragging and didn't sleep well but Wendy didn't sleep a wink. It was also so cold we had to close the hatch. Very early in the morning right at sunrise, I heard a large engine running on a very large boat and looked out to see a Coast Guard cutter sitting to the east of us.

I thought this was very very odd but heard the day before they were in Killarney which is also odd. Well later we would find out that a large boat anchored in Mill Lake, a lake on Collins Inlet a couple miles away that we had almost stayed in,  had drug their anchor overnight and ended up on the rocks. We waited for a couple hours to get going because the winds were supposed to lay down a little. Luckily we were headed down wind to Killarney. We arrived at Killarney and what a busy place this was. We got settled on the mainland side right in the marina. They have another set of docks on the other side of the cut but you have to Ferry across in their pontoon. We looked over on the other side and saw the Omanche, Sea Clef, Sea Y'all, Quo Vadimus and a couple more people we have talked to recently.

The crew from the Adagio stopped by to say hi, we saw them at Henry's, and to see how our loop was going. Went out to dinner and called it a night to try and recover from last night.

Allen and I made a dinghy run for "supplies" to the LCBO which is conveniently located on the water with a dock. They had to help us out with all our stuff. We have contributed greatly to the economy just at the LCBO.

The next day we decided to stay in Killarney to see the area. We took the hike across the water to find the sunken ship. We spotted a bear napping on some rocks.

The water was up so we could not make the sunken ship so we decided to go around the island by dinghy.  Ended up finding it in a cove. Took it easy for the day to rest up for our adventure to come in Baie Finn.

7-30-14
Killarney to Baie Finn

After a good rest for 2 days we made our way to the famed Bay Finn. We rafted up to the Sea Y'all in Marianne Cove and jumped into the dinghy to make the run to The pool at the end of the bay. The wind was heading right up the bay so the ride there was ok but the ride back was bad.

We did the hike to Topaz Lake and saw the cottage that belonged to Ralph Evinrude. Made it back after about a 7 mile ride in the dinghy right into choppy waters, but it was worth it. Made dinner and lost some more supplies while hanging out with Al and Sherry.

Was woke the next morning to the sound of rain on the hatch. After a couple hours Al wanted to hike to the top of Frazier Point when the rain stopped. It finally quit but was a little overcast. We took off and climbed to the top which is about 1200' above sea level.

Looking North over Baie Finn and McGregor Bay on the other side of that.

Dammit Sheri, where are you at.

That was a steep climb. The view was absolutely spectacular. The morning rain made it even more challenging. We got back to the boat and celebrated with a lot of supplies, cooked dinner, then went over to the Sea Y'all for a movie. At about midnight, Wendy and I did the cockpit crawl back to our boat.

8-1-14

Next morning we all finally got going to make our way to Little Current. We decided to stay 3 days till Monday to see the Haweaters Festival and fireworks
Apparently someone can't handle their booze and fell down. He has bilateral fractured femurs, not good.
After 31 years in the FD, l knew just what to do.  Go get a drink and let Wendy fix him.

Got all tucked in at the City Marina and relaxed for a couple days and also had to get enough supplies to get to us all the way to Michigan. Not a lot of big places between here and there.

This boat, the Anne Harper pulled in right next to us and we noticed his Looper flag. He is doing the loop by himself from Texas.

Knocking down some supplies waiting for fireworks.

Hanging out with Horst on the Anne Harper. We were talking politics and global warming. Ok, not really.

After 2 days of just plain old taking it easy, it was Sunday and the last day of the Haweater Festival in Little Current. We ate breakfast at the restaurant and walked around town to see some of the stuff going on. We have been slowly getting stuff to stock up for our North Channel ride west. In the afternoon everyone else was hanging out on the docks waiting for the fireworks show which is right across the waterway. Wendy, Sheri and I went to the top of Horst's boat to have the best view. Al took his very large camera to the shore to get some steady shots of the fireworks. The cruise ship had decided to leave the area and right when it was passing in front of the marina, their stb anchor fell off right in front of everybody watching it leave.
Now he has it.

Now he doesn't.

Allen is quite the photographer. He had a lot of pics of the fireworks and they were great.

It was quite the show especially at the end when one of the mortars didn't go up and blew up on the ground. After the show everybody pretty much called it a night.

The alco-hold all stocked up for the North Channel.

We now know why Canadians have strict gun laws, they are careless with them. We found this bad boy just floating down the waterway.

We are going to be in the North Channel pretty isolated for the next several days. Will get things caught up sometime then.
